Introduction

The Department of Emergency Medicine, Safdarjung Hospital, New Delhi, is a tertiary care centre providing comprehensive, round-the-clock emergency medical services to a large and diverse patient population. As one of the busiest emergency departments in the country, the department plays a pivotal role in delivering timely, evidence-based, and patient-centred emergency care.

Emergency Medicine is a multidisciplinary specialty that interfaces with all clinical departments. The department is committed to ensuring patient safety, rapid triage, prompt resuscitation, and coordinated definitive care for medical, surgical, trauma, obstetric, paediatric, and toxicological emergencies.

Infrastructure

Safdarjung Hospital's New Emergency Block (NEB) is a massive, state-of-the-art facility with 500 beds, critical care units, advanced radiology (CT, MRI), labs (Pathology, Biochemistry), multiple operation theatres, and dedicated ambulance entry, providing high-quality, free emergency care for complex cases making it one of India's largest public hospital emergency centres.

Capacity: A 500-bed block, including 37+ ICU beds and pediatric critical care.

Operation Theatres: Multiple OTs, including minor ones, for immediate surgical needs.

Diagnostics: In-house CT Scan, Ultrasound, Digital X-ray, Biochemistry, Microbiology labs, all free for emergency patients.

Specialized Care: Facilities for multi-disciplinary critical care, including high-end ventilators and portable ultrasound.

Integrated Care: Aims for continuum of care, stabilizing patients before shifting them for definitive treatment.

Modernization: Incorporates modern IT for potential paperless operations and advanced equipment for better diagnostics and interventions.

Services

The Department of Emergency Medicine, Safdarjung Hospital, provides 24×7 emergency care to patients presenting with a wide range of medical, surgical, trauma, obstetric, paediatric, and toxicological emergencies. The department is staffed by Emergency Medicine faculty, residents, nursing officers, and trained technical personnel to ensure timely and effective patient care.

The department is equipped to manage critically ill and unstable patients and functions in close coordination with specialty departments, intensive care units, operation theatres, and diagnostic services. Facilities are available for emergency resuscitation, airway management, continuous patient monitoring, and emergency procedures.

Advanced emergency care equipment including defibrillators, ventilators, cardiac monitors, infusion pumps, non-invasive ventilation, HFNC, and nebulization systems are available for patient management.

The department is supported by a 24-hour Point of Care Testing (POCT) laboratory, providing rapid diagnostic services such as complete blood count, arterial and venous blood gases, cardiac markers, coagulation parameters, toxicology screening, and other essential emergency investigations.
