Cardio Thoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS)
INTRODUCTION
The journey of the Department of Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgery began in Safdarjung Hospital in 1975. Vardhman Mahavir Medical College was established in 2001. The department grew steadily & became a tertiary teaching department in 2008. In the year 2018, the department shifted from old OPD block to the Super Specialty Block, 1st & 5th floor. The department is equipped with dedicated two 19 bedded Cardiothoracic ICUs, 80 bedded ward & 6 operational ORs. OPD services are operational from Monday to Friday. The surgical team provides standard of care 24x7 to wide spectrum of adult & pediatric cardiac, thoracic and vascular cases. In 2019, Structural Heart Valve program in the form of TAVI, TEVAR was started along with Department of Cardiology. First successful Atrial Switch operation and first Arterial Switch operation were successfully performed in 2018 and 2019 respectively. Initially, there were 2 M. Ch CTVS seats per year recognized by MCI, which rose to 5 per year in 2020. In 2022, Robotic Cardio-Thoracic Surgery program was initiated. We were the first government hospital in India to perform Robotic Mitral Valve Replacement. In addition, endovascular procedures are also being performed along with Intervention Radiology unit. First Heart Transplantation was successfully performed in 2023. Endoscopic Vein Harvestation program was initiated in 2026. Robotic Total Endoscopic Coronary Artery Bypass (TECAB) has recently been started.
