Radiodiagnosis and Interventional Radiology

INTRODUCTION

  • Department of Radio-diagnosis and Interventional Radiology offers state-of-the-art diagnostic and interventional radiological facilities to indoor patients, outpatients and patients attending the trauma and emergency services.

  • The Department is equipped with the state-of-the-art modern radiological diagnostic and interventional equipment including MRI (3T systems), Multi slice Spiral CT (256-slice scanners), USG machines including High end machines with Color Doppler, Elastography etc., DEXA bone density scanner, fixed and mobile X ray machines with CR system, Digital Radiography and Fluoroscopy systems and DSA system. The department offers a vast array of modern cross-sectional and conventional radiological investigations. Interventional procedures including Vascular interventions (angioplasty and stenting, embolization, thrombolysis, TACE etc.), various Non-vascular interventions like Hepatobiliary interventions (PTBD, biliary stenting etc.), Musculoskeletal interventions, image guided FNAC and biopsy, percutaneous aspiration and drainage etc. are being routinely done.

  • The department is recognized for post graduate teaching (MD) under GGSIP University, Delhi. The department is also involved in teaching of MBBS students.

  • Service- cum- training is provided  to Senior Residents after post-graduation as governed by the Residency scheme of the Govt. of India. The training is recognized as teaching experience by NMC.

  • BSc Medical imaging Technology program under GGSIPU is being run for over 5 years.

INFRASTRUCTURE

  • Location: Department is spread over the H Block (Main Department) including H block extension, the left wing of the OPD Block on the ground floor, the CIO, the New Emergency Block (NEB) and the Super Specialty Block (SSB).

  • H Block (Main Department) - Department office, 3 Tesla MRI, Ultrasonography including Color Doppler, and Elastography, DEXA bone density scanner, CR and DR digital Radiography

  • H Block extension - 256 slice Dual energy CT scanner, Multislice spiral CT scanner under CSR 

  • OPD Block - 3 Tesla MRI, 256 slice Dual energy CT scanner, Seminar room and departmental library

  • New Emergency Block (NEB) - 256 slice CT scanner, Digital subtraction Angiography (DSA) and vascular IR lab, Non-vascular IR lab, Digital Radiography, Fluroscopy, Ultrasonography, MSK Radiology lab

  • Super Speciality Block (SSB) - 256 slice Dual energy CT scanner, Ultrasonography with Doppler, Digital Radiography

  • Closed on all Gazetted holidays and Sundays.

  • Emergency radiological services which include radiography, emergency ultrasound and CT scan are provided round the clock 24x7 in the New Emergency Block (NEB).

EVENTS

1. Safdarjung Radiology Summit (SRS) 2026 - MRI Teaching course at NAMS Auditorium on 18th and 19th April 2026
The Safdarjung Radiology Summit 2026, themed as an MRI Teaching Course, was successfully organized by the Department of Radiodiagnosis & IR, VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital at the NAMS Auditorium, New Delhi, on 18th and 19th April 2026 in association with National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS) and VMMC Alumni Association. The summit brought together radiologists, postgraduate residents, and clinicians, providing a vibrant academic platform dedicated to advancing MRI education and radiological practice.

The two-day summit witnessed the participation of over 200 delegates, including a large number of postgraduate radiology residents from medical institutions across Delhi and several other states. More than 50 eminent faculty members contributed to the scientific program as speakers, workshop instructors, moderators, and chairpersons, ensuring a rich and engaging academic experience.

 

The scientific program comprised expert lectures, panel discussions, DICOM-based case workshops, and interactive teaching sessions focused on MRI applications across various subspecialties. Topics included neuroradiology, head and neck imaging, abdominal imaging, women’s imaging (gynaecological and breast), musculoskeletal radiology, pediatric imaging, and cardio-vascular imaging. Faculty members shared practical insights into contemporary imaging protocols, advanced MRI applications, structured reporting, and multidisciplinary patient care.

 

Resident participation formed a major highlight of the summit. Oral paper and poster presentation sessions provided a platform for young radiologists to showcase their research and academic work. An interactive MRI-themed quiz competition generated tremendous enthusiasm among postgraduate residents and fostered active learning through healthy academic competition.

 

The DICOM case-based workshops received an excellent response from participants, offering practical learning opportunities and problem-solving approaches in day-to-day radiology practice. The interactive format encouraged lively discussions between faculty and delegates, significantly enriching the educational value of the meeting.

 

The summit also facilitated meaningful academic networking and collaboration among radiologists from diverse institutions. The event concluded with a valedictory session recognizing the contributions of faculty members, chairpersons, award winners, and participants, while reaffirming the commitment of VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital towards excellence in radiology education, research, and innovation.

 

Safdarjung Radiology Summit 2026 was a resounding success, strengthening academic collaboration and providing an outstanding platform for MRI-focused education, resident training, and professional development in radiology.

TEACHING AND TRAINING

The department is recognized for post graduate teaching (MD) under GGSIP University. Postgraduate teaching and training of MD residents includes Case discussion, Seminars, Journal clubs, Interesting Film Sessions and Clinico-Radiological meets with various departments.

Faculty is also involved in undergraduate teaching activities of MBBS students.

The institute provides training to Senior Residents after post-graduation as governed by the Residency scheme of the Govt. of India. The training is recognized as teaching experience by NMC.

The department has imparted training in Radio-diagnosis and ultrasonography to the medical officers sponsored by various government organizations like ITBP, CRPF, BSF, SSB, government of J&K, government of Uttar Pradesh, NHPC and CCL etc.

In addition, paramedical staff of these organizations has also been trained to handle the X-ray equipment.
