Obstetrics and Gynaecology

The Department of Obstetrics &Gynecology is the largest department in Safdarjung Hospital, dealing with more than 30% of the total admissions of the hospital, and providing comprehensive medical care for safe motherhood, population stabilization and protection of women’s health in all stages of their life. Besides Delhi, our department caters to all women coming from all districts of the National Capital region and also gets referred patients from the neighboring states. As in the present scenario Govt. of India is focusing on institutional deliveries, our hospital is one of the busiest hospitals in India catering to a large number of high risk obstetrics patients with number of deliveries reaching almost 25000 per year. 
The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology offers a broad range of inpatient and outpatient services for women including high risk obstetrical care, infertility services for women, routine obstetrics, reproductive endocrinology, gynecological oncology, Uro- gynecology, fetal medicine and comprehensive diagnosis and treatment of routine gynecological disorders. 
There are a total of 355 beds (279 obstetric beds distributed in six wards and 76 gynecology beds distributed in three wards & 15 in HDU/CCU), two labour rooms, and two nurseries for intensive neonatal care, and emergency and el ective operation theatres with facilities for major and minor obstetric and gynecological surgery. Fifteen bedded Obstetrical critical care unit was inaugurated in 12th February, 2016.The Department also has IVF centre where all Infertility Services, IUI/IVF is being done including ICSI. The department also has a subspeciality of Fetal Medicine and Genetic clinic which offers outpatient services, genetic counselling and all fetal invasive diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. It also runs the NEEV clinic which caters to preconception and premarital counselling and screening services. The department is equipped with specialized staff, modern equipment and high technologies of diagnosis and care in Gynecology and Obstetrics. We are able to perform complicated and innovative surgeries and provide quality care to patients. Our hospital is also known for the quality of its training to resident doctors and health workers. State-of-the-art Daksh lab in the department imparts basic and emergency Obstetrical skills to health professionals from different parts of India.

The Outpatient services are provided daily on the 1st floor of the new OPD block. OPD services include ANC, Gynae, Infertility Clinic, Family Planning Services and various Special Clinics Services . 
There is a separate Casualty (GRR- Gynae Recovery Room) of Obstetrics &Gynaecology department which provides round-the-clockemergency services. 
The Maternity Block for indoor services is located at the entrance of gate no. 5 of the hospital on main Ring road. A 24x7 registration counter for facilitating admissions in Obst & Gynae is provided at the entrance of Maternity Block. 
The Department is 365 bedded (Obst & Gynae) housed in 09 Wards along with 2 Labour Rooms (LRs) + 02 Operation Theaters (OTs) + 01 HDU + 01 GRR + 01 IVF Centre.

OPD - (Obstetrics and Gynaecology)

  • PPIUCD counselling
  • Anaemia Mukt Bharat Programme

Gynaecological Services:

  • Screening & management of genital tract cancers
  • Treatment of various gynaecological illnesses
  • Adolescent gynae problems
  • Management of infertility, PID, RTIs and STIs
  • Management of peri- and post- menopausal problems
  • Counselling to couples with RTI/ STI- at Suraksha clinic

Family Welfare Services:

  • It is an integral part of this department
  • Daily OPD services from 9.00AM to 1.00 PM
  • Counselling and provision of contraceptive services
  • Laparoscopic, minilap tubal ligations and postpartum ligations are done daily on day care basis.
  • Male family welfare clinic with provision for non- scalpel vasectomy (NSV) services provided daily on day care basis

Infertility Clinic Services:

Indoor services

  • Indoor Services are provided in the obstetrics and gynae wards
  • Routine and specialised antenatal and postnatal care is imparted
  • Each obstetric ward has one CTG machine for fetal monitoring
  • Deliveries are conducted in two labour rooms
  • Labour rooms are equipped with one ultrasound machine available round the clock and one CTG machine
  • Ultrasound Doppler machine for in-patient assessment
  • In Gynaecological wards patients with gynaecological ailments are managed
  • Patients following surgery & high risk cases are kept in post operative ward (presently in ward 2)

Two projects related to cervical cancer screening have started:

1.“An automated AI-ML based microscopy for pap smear based cervical cancer diagnosis- A collaborative project with Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital, Delhi and ICMR- National Institute of Cancer Prevention & Research, Noida to validate   “An automated AI-ML based microscopy for pap smear based cervical cancer diagnosis” and “An automated sample preparation station for cervical smear” developed by IITD (hereinafter referred as TECHNOLOGY)funded under DHR-ICMR funded project mPragati “MedTech Product Development Acceleration Gateway of India” is a National Centre under the Medical Device and Diagnostics Mission Secretariat (MDMS), sponsored by Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and Department of Health Research (DHR) for development of medical devices.
